Metacognition knowledge and academic achievement of university students Essay In general, metacognition is thinking about thinking. More specifically, Taylor (1999) defines metacognition as â€Å"an appreciation of what one already knows, together with a correct apprehension of the learning task and what knowledge and skills it requires, combined with the agility to make correct inferences about how to apply one’s strategic knowledge to a particular situation, and to do so efficiently and reliably. † The more students are aware of their thinking processes as they learn, the more they can control such matters as goals, dispositions, and attention. Self-awareness promotes self-regulation. If students are aware of how committed (or uncommitted) they are to reaching goals, of how strong (or weak) is their disposition to persist, and of how focused (or wandering) is their attention to a thinking or writing task, they can regulate their commitment, disposition, and attention. To increase their metacognitive abilities, students need to possess three kinds of content knowledge: declarative, procedural, and conditional. Declarative knowledge is the factual information that one knows; it can be declared—spoken or written. Procedural knowledge is knowledge of how to do something, of how to perform the steps in a process. Conditional knowledge is knowledge about when to use a procedure, skill, or strategy and when not to use it; why a procedure works and under what conditions; and why one procedure is better than another. Metacognition affects motivation because it affects attribution and self-efficacy. When students get results on tests and grades on assignments (especially unexpected results such as failures), they perform a mental causal search to explain to themselves why the results happened. When they achieve good results, students tend to attribute the result to two internal factors: their own ability and effort. When they fail, they might attribute the cause to these same internal factors or they might, in a self-protective rationalization, distance themselves from a sense of personal failure by blaming external causes, such as an overly difficult task, an instructor’s perverse testing habits, or bad luck. This tendency to attribute success to ability and effort promotes future success because it develops confidence in one’s ability to solve future unfamiliar and challenging tasks. The converse is also true. Attributing failure to a lack of ability reduces self-confidence and reduces the student’s summoning of intellectual and emotional abilities to the next challenging tasks; attribution theory also explains why such students will be unwilling to seek help from tutors and other support services: they believe it would not be worth their effort. In addition to blaming failure on external causes, underachievers often â€Å"self-handicap† themselves by deliberately putting little effort into an academic task; they thereby protect themselves from attributing their failure to a painful lack of ability by attributing their failure to lack of effort. The tasks that students need to perform vary not only among disciplines but among instructors in the same discipline. An effective strategy for preparing for a multiple choice test in biology is different from what is needed to prepare for a history exam with an essay that asks students to synthesize information from several chapters. Yet students often employ the same strategy—and sometimes the least effective strategy—for studying for very different kinds of tests. Furthermore, many students who perform badly misinterpret the tasks. Students need to understand the task accurately in order to use the most effective strategies. Research Question: The basic aim of the study was to identify the relationship between meta-cognitive knowledge and academic achievement of university students. Methods: To analysis and interpretation of data and Survey was planned to collect data from University of education (UE) and Govt. College University Lahore (GCU). Twenty five (25) students were collected of UE and Twenty five (25) students from GCU randomly. Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) was used to measure meta-cognitive knowledge. This inventory consisted of six components i. e. Planning, monitoring, evaluation, declarative knowledge, conditional knowledge and procedural knowledge but researcher selected three components i. e. declarative knowledge, conditional knowledge, and procedural knowledge. Responses were collected on three point scale i. e. Yes, no and to some extent. Scores of these components were used to compare Metacognitive knowledge of UE and GCU students. Analysis of data was presented in the form of Tables. Null hypothesis: There is no difference b/w the metacognition knowledge and academic achievement of students. Alternative hypothesis: There is difference b/w the metacognition knowledge and academic achievement of students. The study was descriptive in nature as it addressed the prevailing situation of using meta-cognitive knowledge in daily life by students. The target population for this study was the students of UE and GCU Lahore. The researcher selected sample by using convenient sampling technique from the students of UE and GCU Lahore. Fifteen items wee included in the questionnaire taken from meta-cognitive awareness inventory. After the selection of sample and development of the questionnaire, the questionnaires were distributed. The questionnaire was administered personally by the respondent and filled questionnaire collected back. The return rate of the questionnaire was 100% due to personal administration. To analyze the data means standard deviations, independent sample t. test, was calculated. Results: 1. The mean score of Meta-cognitive knowledge (declarative knowledge) of University of Education are same from mean score of Govt. College University. Because the value of t is not significant at ? =0. 05. 2. The mean score of Meta-cognitive knowledge (conditional knowledge) of University of Education are same from mean score of Govt. The Sustainability Revolution of the Twenty-First Century :: Politics Political Essays

The Sustainability Revolution of the Twenty-First Century The direction the world is heading now is unsustainable. We have explored the many facets of this unsustainability throughout our seminar. It is real. And the essence of unsustainability, of course, is that we can not keep it up. There will be change, and as a society, we cannot live in denial of this fact. We must hurry up and figure out how to take control of this change before the change happens to us. What would happen if we let our society continue on its current path without rethinking our values? It is very hard to conceive of our "powerful" nation and fast-paced, glittery way of life ending. I am sure that few Americans really can picture what would happen. It is easiest to assume that we could remain indefinitely in this state of more or less comfortable obliviousness. As long as we have a fresh supply of new products around us, the instantaneous, superficial pleasures can keep us distracted. To try to break through this lazy mindset, I considered looking at similar situations over a larger time scale. There have been many boom civilizations throughout human history that thought they were the pinnacle of existence and could never be defeated. But they all ended, sooner or later. The Greeks, the Romans, the Spanish, the British, etc. etc. etc. (there are plenty from pre-history as well - the more we learn, the more fallen civilizations we find). They are either taken over by another group, are ruined by disease, or because of their inability to change they use up or degrade the resource base that sustained them. To look from a larger scale than just humans, the archaeological record shows the rise and fall of many groups or species in a similar way. Earth was once "ruled" by microscopic organisms, later by dinosaurs, then by megafaunal mammals, and now by us (forgive the major jumps in evolution- I'm just trying to make a point). Current trends towards globalization and thus worldwide spread of materialism and consumption mean that we no longer can consider our fate as an individual "civilization." We now must realize that whatever fate befalls us, befalls humans worldwide. Luckily, more and more people are figuring this out and getting worried. I propose that there will be a cultural backlash against the modern consumptive society, and that the trends will begin to reverse. Analysis of Centaur Abducting Woman with Fallen Lapith Man Essay

  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Perhaps the most interesting period in Greek sculpture is the Classical period. During this glorious period of unbelievable craftsmanship, numerous pieces celebrated the Greek’s infatuation with fable and war. The sculpture, nicely titled Centaur Abducting Lapith Woman and Fallen Lapith Man, is a wonderful symbol of the artistic period and image of war. Sculpted somewhere around 447-438 B.C., the sculpture was carved out of solid marble to produce a beautiful, and yet horrifying scene from a battle.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This sculpture was most likely the artist’s attempt to capture the essence of some fable that had been passed down through the generations. Perhaps more likely, it could have been the artist’s own imagination that fathomed the macabre beauty of the rendered scene. The sculpture is done in high relief, carved out of a solid block of marble. The lines and curves of the sculpture give each character within it great definition. It almost appears though, from the way in which the centaur holds the woman, that he has no head. This adds to the already existing complexity of the sculpture. It is very similar to other sculptures of the Classical period in the way that it depicts a man at death’s doorstep, and a woman being abducted. Business ethics can be defined as â€Å"written and unwritten codes of principles and values that govern decisions and actions within a company. † (Love to Know, n. d. )  Behaving ethically is extremely important for businesses in order to cultivate an image of responsibility and grow a loyal customer base. Companies have a moral obligation to help the communities from which they profit to grow and prosper. Company Q, a small local grocery store chain, has recently closed two stores. These stores were located in a high-crime area and the company reported that they consistently lost money. The area’s food bank requested that Company Q donate day-old merchandise, which management denied. The decision was made to throw away the unused food and the reasoning was that revenue might be lost due to stealing or fraud. Customers of Company Q began requesting more health-conscious and organic products years ago. The company decided to offer a limited amount of these high-margin items. Company Q is not acting in a socially responsible way by closing the stores in the high-crime areas. They had created a local brand and employed members of the community. By closing these two stores, Company Q would only be furthering the the decay of the community by creating more empty store fronts. Once the stores close, its employees would be without work. This will also contribute to the decline of the community. The loss of the local stores would be a hardship to residents, because they would have to spend more time and money to travel further to get the essential items they need. This added hardship would most likely have an effect on the community since there would be fewer resources available to help improve the community Company Q could help contribute to the revitalization of the local areas by increasing their presence in the community and expanding programs designed to engage and include community members. One way to help the company deal with the loss of money from these stores would be to create a more visible security presence. The visual deterrent of security guards, cameras and perhaps even increased police presence could help create a safer environment in which the residents could shop. The area food bank’s request for day-old product donations would be an xcellent way for Company Q to prove their commitment to the community. By helping the local food bank, Company Q would simultaneously help the community’s less fortunate citizens and it help improve their own corporate image. Community interaction and support should be intimately associated with the corporate well-being of the company, as good community stewardship is a very important factor in evaluating the value and social â€Å"worth† of the company. Throwing away food instead of donating it to needy food banks conveys the image that the company does not have a commitment to the community and its people. Neighborhood residents see food being thrown away that could help improve their lives and the lives of those around them and have no real incentive to help make sure that Company Q’s stores prosper in their area. The decision by management to not donate food due to fears of employee theft and fraud shows that the company has no faith in the employees that they have hired. By partnering with their employees and leading by example, Company Q could increase employee loyalty and help show the community that the company does care about them. Employees that are loyal to the company could go above and beyond in their pursuit to have their stores thrive. Offering a more robust organic foods and products selection would certainly benefit the community. Since these items are higher-margin items, the company would prosper even more. Acting in a more socially responsible and ethical manner could help Company Q keep the stores open that they are planning to close. It may also allow them to expand. Likewise, his words during their last meeting echo and translate in Barry’s mind as, â€Å"You do not work hard enough, Barry. You must help in your people’s struggle. Wake up, black man (126)! † These words serve as Barry’s motivation to persevere in all the struggles and responsibilities he has to face. In the play, â€Å"Death of a Salesman,† the father, Willy Loman has the same dreams for his son, Biff. He wishes for him to find his place in society, to be the best he can be. However, since Biff relies too much on his father’s examples, he becomes disappointed when he finds out that all the while, his father has not been true to his mother. The scene in the hotel where Biff finds out about Willy’s other woman devastates him, and ruins his life later on. Due to this, he decides not to attend the summer school and finish his studies. Considering his actions, Willy can be blamed for Biff’s inability to reach his dreams. The boy’s mindset is very much affected by his father’s actions. In contrast to Obama Sr. who serves his country and continues his studies, Willy shares in the disappointment of his son. These examples show us the important role of the father in giving advice to their sons, and in setting a good example. Despite the fact that Obama leaves his son to his wife, the good memory he leaves the boy serves as a good foundation for the child. Moreover, as the older Obama expresses in one of his letters to his son, for one to realize his place in society, one has to know one’s people, where he belongs (66). To do this, Barry searches for his roots and listens to what his grandmother’s story. From this, he finds out the struggles of his grandfather and his father, and finds strength in their sacrifices and dreams. The dreams of his father to be fully educated and to serve his country are enough to inspire Barry to move on and be the best he can be. In contrast, the theme of knowing oneself in order to realize one’s dreams is expressed differently in â€Å"Death of a Salesman. † In the play, Willy’s high expectations of Biff disappoint the son more. Biff insists to his father, â€Å"Pop, I’m nothing! I’m nothing, Pop. Can’t you understand that? There’s no spite in it any more (99)† Despite this, Willy still believes in Biff. He believes that if given a chance and a big sum to start on his own, his son can be successful. Gordon Allport An American Psychologist Psychology Essay Psychology  of  the lack  of interest  and  limited  methods, in general,  fails  to  disclose  or study  of the  integrity  and consistency of  the characters  that  actually  exist.  The greatest drawback  of a psychologist  at the present  time   is  his  inability to  prove the truth  of  what he  knows. Gordon Allport is an outstanding figure in the world of psychology, and now there is hardly a book on psychology of personality without a special chapter on his theory, or at least references to it.  Having experienced the impact of different schools, Allport did not actually belong to any of them, and created his own.  He believed that the comprehensive theory of personality can be created by combining the achievements of different scientific fields, and thus, of course, has earned numerous accusations of eclecticism.  Today, such accusations can be viewed more as praise, for the future of scientific psychology more clearly seen in a balanced position rather than in an opposition of antagonists.  In approving such a position Allport played a very important role, and now has a decent place of honor in the gallery of masters of psychology.  His influence  on  the psychology of  the world  can not be overestimated.   Allport  refers to a rare  type of  systematizers, he  was  perhaps  the smartest  person  of those  who  engaged in the psychology of  personality,  a man  with imagination,  but the  most striking  feature of Allport  was  logical thinking.  Allport introduced  into  the psychology a lot  of new ideas, he smoothed out  the extremes  and  overcome the contradictions of  the science,  that is why he  can rightly be  called one  of the  dialectically-minded  psychologists. He was often  called   eclectic,  and he agreed  with  it,  specifying  that eclecticism  in this  sense  was  not a vice,  but a very  productive  method  of research. (Evans, 1971, p.19) Perhaps  few people  can be  compared  with him  on the number of  ideas  that are included  in textbooks  on  theories  of personality,  and  in  the main  body  of knowledge  of personality psychology.  Allport  was behind the  theory of  traits,  humanistic   psychology,  wrote the first textbook  on  the synthesis  of personality psychology,  has legalized  the introduction  to the academic  science  of qualitative  methods,  research problems  such as  personal  maturity, vision, self-actualization, religiosity.   He  did not make  discoveries or breakthroughs,  has not created a  school or any new paradigm,  but  in many respects  he  is credited with  creating  the psychology of personality  as a  particular subject  area  Ã‚  it  is no exaggeration to  call him the  architect of  personality psychology. During his lifetime Allport managed to get all kinds of honors: he was elected as the president of the American Psychological Association (1939), president of Society of the Study of Social Problems, received the award for outstanding contribution to science (1964), etc. But in his autobiography he admitted that among the  numerous scientific distinctions the most valuable to him was the prize given to him in 1963, a two-volume collection of works of 55 of his former graduate students with the inscription from the students with gratitude for the respect for their individuality. The list of Allports publications includes his reviews and prefaces to other peoples books, as he was engaged in the educational activity: he enriched the American science with ideas of personology of W. Stern, Psychology of the spirit of E. Spranger and Gestalt K. Koffka, W. Kohler and M. Wertheimer.  He was able to assess the significance for psychology of the ideas of existentialism, and supported the establishment of the Association of Humanistic Psychology.     Another distinctive feature of scientific style of Allport is to be always on the cutting edge of social issues of the time, because he wanted to study what was more important for people.  In many specific areas he has created articles and books: the Psychology of expressive movements, psychology radio, rumors psychology, psychology of war, the psychology of religion, and his 600-page work devoted to the nature of prejudice for almost 50 years remains the main source of the problem, and its relevance only increases. Gordon Allport Biography Gordon Willard Allport was born on November 11, 1897 in Montezuma, Indiana.  He was the youngest of four sons of John and Nellie Allport.  His father was a modest and not very successful doctor, his private clinic was situated within the walls of his own house.  Allports mother was a schoolteacher, and, most importantly, a devout and pious woman, and she thought the children of reasonable, orderly and virtuous life skills.  And the character of Gordon was formed largely under the influence of a strict, but humane maternal morality.   Gordon in 1915 went to Harvard, and from then began a half-century of his collaboration with Harvard University.  At Harvard, the intellectual abilities of Gordon turned in full force and gained focus.  In parallel with the psychology he dealt with social ethics from an early age his interest was divided between psychology and the broader social context, and not by accident in the 30 years he created at Harvard the Department of Social Relations, an interdisciplinary by its very nature, with synthetic approaches of psychology, sociology and anthropology.   A distinctive feature of the scientific outlook of Allport was a pretty big influence on him of European psychology, especially of William Stern, Eduard Spranger, and Gestalt psychology (in many respects this was caused by staying of young scientist in Europe in the early 1920s).  Influenced by these ideas, Allport, having been engaged in a 1920 in study of the issues of personality psychology, especially of personality traits and expressive movements, he quickly realized the need to consider the whole personality, rather than its parts. After returning  to  Harvard,  Allport  at the age of 24  wrote his doctorate  in psychology, but the key  ideas of  his work  were  presented  to them  a year earlier  in  the article  Personality  traits:  their classification and  measurement,  written jointly  with  his brother  Floyd, and  published  in the  Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology. In the next two years Allport went to the internship in Europe first in Germany, where he worked with M. Wertheimer, V. Kohler, W. Stern, C. Stumpf, and then for a short time in England, at Cambridge.  Drawing on personal experience with work with masters of German psychology, he later at home has long been a leading expert in this area and the interpreter of their ideas. In 1924 he returned to Harvard, where he began to read a completely new course of personality psychology.  It is important to note that until then, many psychologists considered problems in the theory of personality not as psychological.  The final breakthrough in this area has occurred in 1937, after publication of the Allports major monograph Personality: a psychological study.  In it the author (by the way, long before the groundbreaking theory of Maslow) was first to study a healthy personality and described its essential features. Allports collection of works Personality in Psychology presents a wide range of his interests: health issues, religion and superstition, social prejudices, as well as the main methodological problems of psychology.  In his work, which was reflected in 12 books and more than two hundred articles, he tried to capture the complexity of human existence in the contemporary social context and resolutely refused to follow the fashionable tenets of his profession, demonstrating commitment to the imaginative and systematic eclecticism. During his career, Allport was awarded with almost all the regalia of a psychologist: he was elected president of the American Psychological Association (1939), President of the psychological study of social problems, in 1963 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the American Psychological Foundation, in 1964, APA received an award for outstanding contribution  in science.   Allports approach to personality Allport was the first in the world of psychology to build a holistic theoretical knowledge of the scientific psychology of personality.  His book Personality: a psychological interpretation, which was published in 1937, marked the beginning of the academic personality psychology.  Personality, by Allport, is a dynamic organization of psycho-physical systems of the individual, which defines a unique adaptation of the individual to his environment. (Allport, 1937) G. Allport theory of personality is a combination of humanistic and individual approaches to the study of human behavior.  Humanistic approach lies in an attempt to identify all aspects of human beings, and individual approach is reflected in an effort of G. Allport to understand and predict the development of the real, specific person.  One of the main postulates of the theory of G. Allport is that personality is open and self-developing.  People first and foremost are a social beings and therefore can not develop without contacts with other people and society.  Here comes the Allport rejection of psychoanalysis on the antagonistic, hostile relations between the individual and society.  In this case, G. Allport argued that the communication of personality and society is not striving for balance with the medium, but for networking and interaction.  Thus, he strongly objected to the generally accepted postulate that development is an adaptation, an adaptation of man to the outside world, arguing that human nature just need to blow up the balance and reach more and more new peaks.   Explaining human behavior, G. Allport introduced the concept of traits.  He defined the trait as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦the neuropsychological structure capable of converting a set of functionally equivalent stimuli, and to encourage and guide equivalent forms of adaptive and expressive behavior.  Simply it is propensity to behave in a similar manner in a wide range of situations.  G. Allport theory states that human behavior is relatively stable over time and in diverse situations.  In the G. Allport system personality is characterized by traits, or defining characteristics. He proposed eight basic criteria for determining personality traits:   personality traits are real: they exist in humans, and are not theoretical abstractions;   personality trait is a more generalized notion than a habit; personality traits is the driving, or at least, a defining element of behavior, it motivates the individual;   the existence of personality traits can be established empirically;   personality traits is only relatively independent, as people tend to react to events and phenomena according to a generalized manner;   personality traits can not be associated with this individual moral or social assessment; the fact that actions and habits are inconsistent with the personality traits is not evidence of lack of that traits.   Allports Theory of Individual Trait and Common Trait Each person is an idiom unto himself, an apparent violation of the syntax of the species.   ( Allport G. Becoming: Basic Considerations for a Psychology of Personality,1955, p.19).   G. Allport pointed general and individual traits.  The first include any characteristics peculiar to some number of people within a particular culture.  Individual traits represent characteristics of the individual, which does not allow comparison with other people, that are those neuropsychiatric elements that direct, manage and motivate a certain type of behavior.  This category of traits more fully reflects the personality structure of each individual.   Later G. Allport called individual personality traits as dispositions, and identified three types of them: Radical disposition.  Almost all human actions can be explained by the influence of inborn traits.   Central dispositions.  They do not dominate, but are the foundation of human individuality.   Secondary dispositions.  These traits are less visible, less generalized, less stable and therefore less suitable for the characteristics of personality.  For example, eating habits and clothing, etc.   G. Allport believed that personality is determined by the unity and integration of individual traits that give him originality.   The Proprium In 1950 Allport, however, introduced a new concept to replace the traditional I concept the notion of proprium.  A  Proprium by Allport is similar to what William James once explained as an area of I.  The main thing that has developed Allport in connection with the concept of the proprium and proprium structures of personality is periodization of personal development, based on seven aspects of proprium.   G. Allport identified seven stages of development of proprium from childhood to adulthood:    During the first three years child demonstrate three aspects: the sense of a body, a sense of continuous self-identity and self-esteem or pride. At the age of four to six years, there are two other aspects: self-identification and self-image. Between six and twelve years a child develops self-awareness, so that he can cope with problems on the basis of rational thought. In adolescence, there are intentions, plans and long-term goals, they called their own aspirations. So,  in  an adult  individual we can see  a person  whose  determinants  of behavior  is  a system  of organized  and  congruent  traits, these  traits  resulted from many different motivations of a  newborn.  Normal  individuals  usually know  what  they are  doing and why.  This  behavior is consistent with  congruent  pattern,  and  at the core  of this pattern  lie traits that  G.  Allport  called  proprium.  Complete  understanding of  the adult  is not possible without  considering his  goals  and  aspirations. Motive and Functional Autonomy According to Allport, the core of the personality are the motives of activity.  In order to explain the nature of motivation, he introduced the concept of functional autonomy, which means that the motivation of the adult is not functionally connected with his childhood experiences.  Motives of human activity do not depend on the initial circumstances of their occurrence.   Thus, adults are responsible for their deeds and actions, and do not depend on the vicissitudes of childhood. Motives  of adults  can not, according to  Allport,  result  from their  childrens  intentions and perceptions,  and  these goals  are determined by  the current  situation  and  current intentions.   Thus, functional  autonomy,  in the view of  Allport,  are motives of adults  which do not depend  on  their  childrens   experiences. Criticism of Allport Despite his  influence in  psychology,  theory of  Allport  has not received  sufficient experimental  confirmation.  What is the empirical validity of the theoretical concept of personality in Allport?  Analysis of relevant literature shows that the Allports theory does not rise any study to confirm its validity.  With his views and concepts agreed only few well-known authors in the field Personology (Maddi, 1972).   Allports position,  emphasizing the  uniqueness of the human  personality, as well as  the importance  of understanding   personal  goals  and expectations,  had a  significant  impact on  the views of  Abraham  Maslow,  Carl  Rogers  and  other members of  humanistic psychology.  Allport  work  on  personality theory  have played  a significant  role  in the renewed interest  of researchers in  this  subject.  His  idea of  produce  a very  strong impressionà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ã‚  and  gives  impetus to  a number  of new theoretical and  applied  research  in contemporary  personality psychology. (Evans, 1971) Conclusion During the years of his long and highly productive career at Harvard University, Gordon Allport has done much to make research on the psychology of the individual of an academic importance.  Before his book Personality: psychological interpretation, the theory of personality problems in general was not considered as the subject of psychology.  G. Allport was one of the few psychologists who made a bridge between academic psychology with its traditions on the one hand, and rapidly evolving field of clinical psychology and personality psychology on the other.  This connection not only enriches sub-discipline discoveries, but also allows to set the intellectual continuity that is important for the future development of psychology.   Finally, the novelty of the position of G. Allport lies in the fact that he focused on the future and present, and rarely on the past.   Gordon Allport was a unique, proactive, integrated, forward-looking person, who left great theoretical material on the psychology of individual, and  influenced  many  scientists, their  views and  approaches,  as well as all   the science of psychology.

Madness and Hamlet       Hamlet is one of William Shakespeare's most honored works and is a piece of literature, which has been studied in depth by many a scholar. The storyline of Hamlet follows a vein of madness that begins with Claudius' murdering King Hamlet and ending with the tragic killing of almost every main character. Many reasons have been proposed for the ultimate tragedy, which occurs at the conclusion of the play. It will be argued in this essay that madness is the cause of the eventual tragedy in Shakespeare's Hamlet.    Claudius' murdering of his brother, the king is the first murderous act of mental illness in the story and it sets into course the madness of many other characters. Murdering one's brother so that they may marry their sister in law is not the act or desire of a sane person. After the king's death, Claudius and Gertrude marry within a matter of months. This quick marriage circumvents the standard mourning period of one year that is expected of a queen. Hamlet is greatly disturbed by the fact that his mother does not mourn longer for his fathers death and conveys his anger about this subject on several occasions. The marriage of a man to his sister in law is thought incestuous by the church and contributes to the overall lack of decency in this story. Claudius is directly responsible for the death of the king, Hamlet's father, and he also contributes to the deaths of Gertrude and Hamlet. His actions set into course a series of events of which the end result is the deaths of Polonius, Laertes, and Ophelia. He is also indirectly responsible for the deaths of these characters.    Hamlet's display of mental illness allows him to prove to himself that Claudius did, in fact, murder his father. After seeing the ghost of his father, Hamlet vows to avenge his death and decides that feigning lunacy will provide him with the means to prove Claudius' guilt. Following his initial encounter with the ghost of his father, Hamlet is very excitedly speaking with Marcellus and Horatio and tells them:    But come / Here, as before, never, so help you mercy

Limescale: Water and Vinegar Essay

Limescale is the deposits left behind by hard water. Limescale is mainly made up of calcium and magnesium. We advise you not to use acetic acid-based descaler (vinegar), as this could have a negative effect on the taste of the coffee. Note: Never use a vinegar-based descaling agent with 8% or more acetic acid to descale the appliance, as this may cause damage. (2) citric acid is used mainly for home use, for getting rid of lime scale,(kettles, baths, toilets), in hard water areas. It is a natural material (found in fruit), and is non toxic, and doesn’t smell like vinegar would if you used that. By the way, I’ve answered your sulfamic acid question. (3) Citric acid is a colourless fruit acid. It is obtained directly from citrus fruits but can also be produced biotechnically. In system cleaning, the citric acid in AquaStar 1 is used for natural and effective descaling of the drinking water system (the water heater in particular). The descaling effect is achieved by a combination of the acid and the formation of a calcium complex. The advantage of using citric acid instead of vinegar for cleaning drinking water systems is the avoidance of the unpleasant vinegary taste. Citric acid also affords better corrosion protection to stainless steel containers by removing free iron from their surfaces. Vinegar is produced by fermenting alcoholic liquids with acetic acid bacteria (Mycoderma aceti). Vinegar is a descaling agent due to its acid content, but it leaves behind an unpleasant taste which adheres to plastics and rubber and is very difficult to remove. Vinegar is not suitable for descaling drinking water systems in mobile homes, as it attacks rubber seals and even some metals. (4) Many people believe that vinegar is the best limescale remover. However, using a citric acid-based decalcifier may cause precipitation and thus deposits that can prevent your household appliances from functioning properly, for example by clogging the fine lines and valves in coffee machines. The citric acid can also create an insoluble film that seals off the limescale deposits. Moreover, the decalcification process will take significantly longer with citric acid than with durgol ®. The acetic acid and flavour additives in vinegar or vinegar essence produce an unpleasant odour during decalcification. A further problem is that the odour can be absorbed into plastic materials, an unwelcome side effect especially in food-related applications. Furthermore, certain plastics can be damaged by acetic acid. As with citric acid, decalcification takes significantly longer with vinegar than with durgol ®. (5) Advantages of using Sulphamic Acid Sulphamic Acid has very high shelf life. Sulphamic acid do not require storage/handing arrangement hence no adulteration possible. Sulphamic acid has very high effectivity of the descaling. Complete cleaning can be chemically achieved by Sulphamic acid and does not require post descaling manual cleaning. Sulphamic acid is safe acid, packed in 50 kgs HDPE bags and has no handling hazards. No storage tanks / system required for dosing. The solid can be directly charged to system eliminating the cost of system reduces the leave of scaling solids and acts as anti – descalant. Accidental excess dosing does not affect the metal of the circulating system but it acts to remove the deposited scale from the system. It is recommended to does into the cooling water for descaling the condenser on running plant. (6) Use vinegar to clean away the scale that forms at the base of your kettle or around your showerhead. The acid in vinegar makes it a great all-round cleaner, and it’s also what makes it an ideal natural descaler. Use the cheapest vinegar you can find. Pour this into your kettle and leave it overnight. The next day, pour the vinegar back into its bottle – you can keep it and reuse it for descaling, it’ll work time and time again. Just remember to label the bottle so you don’t mix it up with the vinegar you use in your food! You’ll see that your kettle is sparkling and scale-free once you’ve treated it with vinegar overnight. Rinse it out well, and boil a couple of kettles of water to remove any traces of vinegar before using it again. You can also put your showerhead in a bowl of vinegar – again, it’s best to leave this overnight. The vinegar will clean away any scale that builds up around the water holes in your shower head. It’s good to do this regularly (every couple of months) as blocked holes in your shower head can actually cause water temperature fluctuations, which are never pleasant in the shower! As with the vinegar you use for your kettle, you can re-use vinegar descaling the showerhead. (7) Limescale consists of insoluble calcium salts such as calcium carbonate. Descalers act by forming soluble calcium salts allowing the scale to be washed away . These descalers are usually acidic – vinegar can be used as a descaler because it contains acetic acid and it will react with the scale to produce calcium acetate, which is soluble. The disadvantage of vinegar is that it has a strong taste and smell – so if it is used to descale a kettle , the taste and smell will linger for some time giving a bad taste to tea or coffee made using water from the kettle. Citric acid is preferred because it does not have this disadvantage. It will produce soluble calcium citrate.
